light/shade – chalk

Chiaroscuro (light-dark) drawings can work to dramatic effect when used with black paper. I find sketching in reverse challenging, as it forces you to look at the lightest areas first – the default drawing of the outline becomes less important as your eye concentrates on light and shade.

Drawing with white chalk combined with black charcoal or pastels onto black paper stock, helps you observe and draw differently.
